This time, I’ll set fashion aside to tell another love story.

A story in which I was merely a supporting character, but one that deserves to be told before it fades with time.

I’ve always been passionate about animals. Horses are definitely my favorites, but dogs have always held a special place in my heart.

When I was two years old, I met my first friend. My father used to say it was love at first sight, and there was nothing he could do but bring the little puppy home. We grew up together and were inseparable. Even though he was a temperamental little dog, a true Pekingese, I can say I was his favorite person.

We spent just over 12 years together, defying the odds that he’d make it to 10. Together, we built a collection of stories I could spend hours telling.

But this story isn’t about little Tande and me. It’s about my old friend Beethoven and his best friend, my father.

One afternoon in April 2008, Beethoven came into our lives like a small whirlwind and effortlessly found his place in everyone’s heart. Getting a dog wasn’t in the plans at the time, but my father didn’t hesitate to bring him home along with his sister, who eventually was adopted by another family.

Beethoven, a name I chose in honor of the German composer, was only two weeks old. A fluffy ball of white fur with black spots and, according to his new best friend, a true Brazilian Terrier. That claim was quickly disproven when he grew to be twice the size and weight of a typical dog of the breed.

At first, I was reluctant to welcome a new member into the family. I knew I’d get attached, and sooner or later, I’d have to face another loss.

But one day, after destroying every plant on our terrace, he simply sat on my feet, looked into my eyes with an expression capable of melting any heart, and gave me no choice but to love him.

In the first few weeks, I discovered that the supposedly calm dog was a complete fraud, but even so, there was no way I could part with him.

For a long time, I believed I was his favorite person. But as the years passed, it became clear that someone else had already claimed that spot.

Beethoven and my father created their own routine. Not a single day went by without my father checking on his friend before leaving for work, and he always made time for him when he returned.

On weekends, armed with a thermos of water, a leash, rarely used, and all the love they had for each other, they wandered aimlessly. Occasionally, I’d ask if it wasn’t too tiring for them, but seeing them back home was enough to know everything would be fine as long as they were together.

Then came the pandemic. We had more time together as a family, and so did they. What none of us expected was that, once that storm passed, we’d face another, one we were completely unprepared for.

My father passed away in his sleep on July 16, 2022. It was a sudden and strangely peaceful death at home. For hours and days, I questioned why it had happened. After all, a healthy man, strong as a wall, shouldn’t just die “out of nowhere.”

And here’s my confession: for the first time in my life, someone who always believed that everything God does has a purpose and always trusted His will for my life, I found myself questioning Him repeatedly in the midst of my grief.

But two weeks later, I had to set my pain aside to care for the old friend my father had left behind.

I won’t lie: I was on autopilot, completely immersed in mourning. It never crossed my mind that Beethoven might be struggling just as much with the absence of his best friend.

Then came the first crisis. At 14 years old, it could have been attributed to age by anyone looking from the outside, but we knew from the start it was something much deeper.

The crises became frequent, the crying and whining through the night, the relentless search for the best friend he never understood wouldn’t return.

The cheerful, active, mischievous, and playful dog he once was got lost in the pain of absence and the hope of a reunion that never came.

In the final months of 2024, things worsened. Beethoven, now 16 years and a few months old, began having serious mobility issues and episodes of weakness that lasted for days but eventually passed. However, in September, three days after my birthday, I had to hospitalize him due to facial swelling. The initial diagnosis pointed to a possible kidney issue, but deep down, I always knew any medical explanation was just a justification for what was coming.

Almost two weeks ago, we received a new diagnosis. It wasn’t a kidney problem, but a bacterial infection that took advantage of a moment of vulnerability.

Faced with the situation, the word “euthanasia” was mentioned for the first time in an honest conversation with the veterinarian, who has supported us every step of the way. But after hearing a summary of the story I now tell in detail, we decided to try one last time, even knowing the fight would be tough.

The first week was incredibly positive. I prayed to God for a miracle and truly believed my old friend would recover, or at least have quality of life until he was ready to leave in His time.

However, last Tuesday, after a follow-up appointment, things took a turn no one wanted.

Today, after three sleepless nights thinking about what would be best for him, days trying to offer everything he always loved, weeks searching for the best treatment, and two years and eight months watching Beethoven become a shadow of the whirlwind he once was, I made one of the hardest decisions of my life.

I chose what would be best for him.

Even though my heart is breaking piece by piece at the thought of saying goodbye, I chose not to prolong the suffering of the one who was my loyal friend, even if I wasn’t his favorite person, and who saw the best in me throughout our 16 years and 10 months together.

I don’t know exactly how things work up there, but I like to believe that, when the time comes, he’ll be beside the best friend who never truly left him – even if he believed otherwise.

And this time, he’ll be truly happy again.

As for me, I share this story with a heavy heart, but full of gratitude for the time we had together.

I don’t know how long it will take for the pain of separation to turn into longing filled with good memories, but I’m certain I’ll never forget him.

My little whirlwind will always have a place in my heart. He’ll always be part of this family, the one he taught so much about love, the family that loved him deeply and always will.

E aqui está minha confissão: pela primeira vez na vida, me vi questionando Deus repetidamente em meio ao luto, mesmo sempre tendo acreditado que tudo o que Ele faz tem um propósito e confiado na vontade Dele para minha vida.

Mas duas semanas depois, tive que deixar minha dor de lado para cuidar do velho amigo que meu pai havia deixado para trás.

Não vou mentir: eu estava no piloto automático, completamente imersa no luto. Nunca me passou pela cabeça que Beethoven poderia estar lidando tão mal com a ausência de seu melhor amigo.

Então veio a primeira crise. Aos 14 anos, poderia ser algo atribuído à idade por quem olhasse de fora, mas sabíamos desde o início que se tratava de algo muito mais profundo.

As crises se tornaram frequentes, os choros e resmungos durante a madrugada, a busca incansável pelo melhor amigo – aquele que ele nunca entendeu que não voltaria.

O cachorro alegre, ativo, bagunceiro e brincalhão que ele um dia foi se perdeu na dor da ausência e na esperança de um reencontro frustrado dia após dia.

Nos últimos meses de 2024, as coisas pioraram. Beethoven, agora com 16 anos e alguns meses, começou a ter sérios problemas de locomoção e episódios de fraqueza que duravam alguns dias, mas eventualmente passavam. No entanto, em setembro, três dias após meu aniversário, precisei interná-lo devido a um edema facial. O diagnóstico inicial apontava para um possível problema renal, mas, no fundo, eu sempre soube que qualquer explicação médica seria apenas uma justificativa para este momento.

Há quase duas semanas, recebemos um novo diagnóstico. Não era um problema renal, mas sim uma bactéria que encontrou uma oportunidade para causar danos em um momento de vulnerabilidade.

Diante do quadro, a palavra “eutanásia” foi mencionada pela primeira vez em uma conversa honesta com a veterinária, que nos apoiou e continua nos apoiando em todas as etapas. Mas, após ouvir um resumo da história que agora conto em detalhes, decidimos tentar uma última vez, mesmo sabendo que a luta seria difícil.

A primeira semana foi incrivelmente positiva. Pedi a Deus por um milagre e realmente acreditei que meu velho amigo ficaria curado, ou pelo menos teria qualidade de vida até que estivesse pronto para partir no tempo Dele.

No entanto, na última terça-feira, após a consulta de retorno, as coisas tomaram um rumo que ninguém gostaria.

Hoje, depois de três noites mal dormidas pensando no que seria melhor para ele, dias tentando oferecer tudo o que ele sempre gostou, semanas em busca do melhor tratamento e dois anos e oito meses vendo Beethoven se tornar a sombra do furacão que um dia foi, tomei uma das decisões mais difíceis da minha vida.

Escolhi o que seria melhor para ele.

Ainda que meu coração esteja se partindo pedaço por pedaço ao pensar na despedida, escolhi não prolongar o sofrimento daquele que foi meu amigo fiel, mesmo que eu não fosse sua pessoa favorita, e que enxergou o melhor de mim nesses 16 anos e 10 meses juntos.

Não sei ao certo como funcionam as coisas lá em cima, mas gosto de acreditar que, quando acontecer, ele estará ao lado do melhor amigo que nunca o abandonou – mesmo que ele tenha acreditado que sim.

E, dessa vez, ele será verdadeiramente feliz outra vez.

Quanto a mim, conto essa história com o coração pesado, mas cheia de gratidão pelo tempo que tivemos juntos.

Não sei quanto tempo levará para que a dor da separação se transforme em saudade carregada de boas lembranças, mas tenho certeza de que nunca o esquecerei.

Meu pequeno furacão sempre terá um lugar no meu coração. Sempre será parte dessa família, a qual ele tanto ensinou sobre amor, a família que o amou profundamente e sempre vai amá-lo.
